Why Is It Important To Stay Connected In A Long-Distance Relationship?

Having been in a LDR myself for 5 long years, I cannot stress enough how important is it to stay connected with each other. Technology has made it easier to be virtually present in each other’s lives for LDR couples, ad they must make good use of it.

Yes, it takes quite a lot of effort and a bit of calculations (especially if you are in different time zones), but if this relationship is important for you, you will be able to make time for each other. To show each other that they are important, LDR couples need to priortize communication and figure out ways to be in each others’ lives without being there physically.

Partners who stay connected when apart agree that knowing what’s happening with each other and staying constantly in touch helps them feel secure and keeps romance alive.

Staying connected in a long-distance relationship:

  • Fosters a strong emotional connection
  • Is an expression of love and care
  • Spreads happiness and boosts morale while staying afar
  • Maintains trust and commitment in a relationship
  • Keeps the romance alive
  • Makes partners feel secure

1. Plan online game nights

Your long-distance partner is going to jump on this idea of playing video games together, more so if he is a gaming freak. And why shouldn’t he? Games are a fun way to spend quality time with each other. And, believe us, when you play games you can spend endless hours with each other virtually, without even realizing it!

Plan a game night, competing with each other in a face-off. There are many online games you can play – from everyone’s favorite PubG to card games, from casino games like roulette to a battle of intelligence with chess. These multiplayer games will give you both something fun to do together even as you lock horns in a friendly competition.

2. Write love letters to each other

In this digital age of Skype and FaceTime, old-school handwritten letters are interesting and unique. No matter how instant text messages help us feel connected, snail mail has still got its own charm that can never be paralleled.

Take out that fancy stationery you have been hoarding forever, and pour your heart out on the paper. Express your love for your partner in its most passionate form and send it to them in the mail. You can even give a dedicated time where both of you write letters to each other virtually together.

Bonus points, if you read it out to them during your video chats and see them blush even as you bask in the crimson glow! These letters will be a great keepsake that can treasure your love forever.

3. Send them a surprise delivery

One of the best things about long-distance love is how you keep the relationship alive with surprises. So our list of 11 sweet things to do in a long-distance relationship has to have a surprise delivery that can make your boyfriend feel special and loved. National (and even international) deliveries have made it easier for lovebirds to express themselves with sweet gestures such as these.

  • Send your LDR partner their favorite meal, a box of chocolates, or a decadent gooey cheesecake from a new restaurant – Uber Eats can act your cupid making sure your SO feels loved and cared for
  • Send them their signature scent

4. Plan romantic virtual date nights

What’s a relationship without some romantic date nights thrown in? Well, yes, still a relationship, but a tad too boring. Whoever said that ldr couples can’t go on dates certainly never heard of virtual dates!

Yes, it might be somewhat challenging if you are in different time zones or across continents, but dedicating a day and a time just for the two of you can be eventually worked out.

We know how you miss getting dolled up and going on dates with the love of your life. You might not be in the same room on your date, but, you can still get the essence of it with virtual date nights.

You guys could be on phone calls throughout the day, but you must spend time to make things interesting with a formal date. You can both cook the same meals and polish them off together over a video chat.

Or, if you’re too lazy to play Master Chef, simply order in! Don’t forget to slip into that sexy dress you wore on your prom night. Guys, take your tuxedo out, dust it off, and put your most stylish foot forward. You can even plan virtual tours!

My colleagues Jake and Sarah spent most of the relationship over long distances. Every month they would have a wine-tasting date night that keep the lovelorn couples closer and gave them a common interest to bond over.

5. Binge-watch together

‘Netflix and chill’ – has been the mantra of all couples of late. How can it not make its way to our checklist of 11 sweet things to do in a long-distance relationship? Binge-watching TV shows together is a classic long-distance activity and for good reason. It’s a great way to bond over a shared interest, and you can discuss the plot and characters of the same movie or show as you go.

  • Take your pick from the latest releases
  • Grab some snacks
  • Get into your comfy PJs
  • And watch movies while you idle the time away, with your long-distance love.

In fact, you can make a whole series of activities out of this idea – both of you can work on a watchlist, pop some corn, and curl up on your couch, all virtually together!

6. Plan surprise visits

We understand that this is something that can’t be done frequently, but a surprise visit for once can be a great way to show your love. If your agenda is to make him feel special in a long-distance relationship, then you must give it a try.

Make your special occasions, super special with an unannounced visit, and, take our word, this would be the most romantic thing ever! Imagine hugging your long-distance love after the end of a rough day. Would it not make you feel special and loved?

You might want to coordinate with some of their colleagues or friends to know their schedules and whereabouts on the day you are visiting. Stay in touch with them throughout the day like you usually do so as not to lead them onto suspecting something fishy. When they are chilling at home, drop in with a big smile and maybe a cake to celebrate the meet, and see their mouth open wide in amazement.

7. Go down and dirty

Long-distance couples often miss the zing and fun of being physically close to each other. With video calls and more, distance is no longer a hindrance. If you are unsure how to go about it, start with dirty talking your way through the night or sharing a few naughty pictures.

It’s time to drop the cloak and get unabashedly flirty with your partner. Phone sex can add oomph to your regular messages, and pep it up with much-needed fun.

If you both have bath-tubs, just make yourself some bubble bath, and light some candles and indulge in a bubble bath session online. Just ensure all appropriate safty measures are in place.

Ever tried your hand at sexting? If not, then you’re missing out on SO much! Drop some sultry and suggestive good morning messages to romance your long-distance boyfriend. Let them pour in throughout the day, add to his excitement with some racy and naughty photos that give him nothing more than just a sneak peek ;), and ‘finish’ in a ‘climax’! Any relationship can never be half as fun without this!

8. Make them a part of your daily life

Find a bestie in your partner to whom you would confide every sorrow, pain, and joy of your life. Nothing can be sweeter than this!

My friend Hannah has been in a long-distance relationship with Ron for 8 years now. I’ve seen them having each other’s back through thick and thin. How did they pull it off? They know each other inside and out. Both of them make sure that distance does not keep them apart, they are always connected throughout the day. Some of the things you can do are:

  • Share pictures of your day
  • Send them a little video or a voice note
  • Tell them how your day was, what made you smile or frown today
  • Fall asleep virtually together talking to each other

All this will keep them involved in your life even when you two are miles apart.

  • A personalised photo album

10. Send them handmade cards

There is something about handmade things that ooze love and care. Of course, one can always have plenty of store-bought stuff to present their love with, but the charm of a handmade gift can never be equaled. Sweet, aren’t they? It’s all about the gesture, in the end.

Present your long-distance love with a handmade gift that exudes the warmth of your love. There are many DIY kits available in the market that can give you creative ideas. A scrapbook, a photo collage, a simple card, a candle, or a painted bottle – it can be anything really, as long as it is made with love! And please, do not keep these to yourself for your next visit, courier it to them right away!

11. Read out love sonnets

Picture this – you and your partner are deeply immersed in reading your favorite love sonnets to each other over a video call, dedicating it, enacting it, and expressing deep-seated emotions. The time comes to a standstill as you look into each other’s eyes. How romantic and sweet is that? Bonus points, if either of you can read out a self-written poem or couplet!

This one comes from my personal experience. I was in an LDR for the most part of my relationship,  and things were really difficult – the loneliness, the perpetual need for love, and the physical distance got too much for us to handle. We used to find solace and comfort in such random video calls when either of us would pull out a love story or poem and read.

The written words often expressed our hitherto unheard emotions, and before we knew it, we mutually decided to hang in there just for the love for each other and today we’ve been married for 8 years. Simple and surreal it does sound in hindsight, but it was sweet little gestures such as these that brought us closer.

Long-distance relationships are indeed tough, but try to navigate with this guide on 11 sweet things to do in a long-distance relationship, and you’ll find your love destination. These activities can strengthen your bond and create lasting memories. Remember, no distance is too much in love. With a little creativity and a lot of heart, you can make a long-distance relationship work smoothly.
